Pine Hollow Community Reads Lunches:

We're cultivating a culture of reading at PHMS by sharing our reading with our community. Pine Hollow Community Reads is born out of this desire to see students, school staff, parents, relatives, and neighbors read the same book and engage in discussion and related activities with each other. Our first selection is Refugee by Alan Gratz. (

Lunch discussion meetings are being held in the Pine Hollow Library on Thursdays in December and January during each grade level lunch. Family members are welcome to join each lunch meeting, bring their lunch, and share in discussions with the group. Please RSVP  so we know that you'll be in attendance. In January, we will have an after school program featuring a guest speaker (more details to come). If you have any questions, please contact Kristen Ziller (library media specialist, or Mike Hutchinson (6th grade Social Studies teacher,

Cultural Arts at Pine Hollow.  We currently have two events planned and have another two in the works.

February 5 – Tracks 2 & 4

February 26 – Tracks 1 & 3

North Carolina Theatre Conservatory will perform Sounds of Freedom to our 7th and 8th Graders.

In this enriching and interactive performance students will hear songs from many different genres of African-American music as well as narratives that set historical context about how the genres came into existence. The program develops chronologically, starting with Call and Response, then moving to Negro Spirituals, Ragtime, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Motown, Rap, and ending with present day. This dynamic team of singer and pianist will bring the history of American Civil Rights alive and provide your students a deeper understanding of this ongoing journey.

March 8 – all grades will enjoy “The Beast”.

Students learn elements of Storytelling, Improvisation and Call and Response in American Music through a brilliant mix of TedTalk-style interactive lecture with an exciting live band. During SANKOFA, students learn about oral tradition through the West African storyteller/poet known as the Griot; explore coded language in Spirituals; discover improvisation in Jazz; learn call and response in Reggae, and party with their teachers to classic Hip Hop

Family Nights in 2019.  Be sure to mark your calendars!
